A Guide to Chinese KTV

When backpacking in China, locals will often invite you for a KTV night. In very simple words, KTV is a kind of bar or club where most of Chinese go to have fun every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. KTVs have private rooms which look very fancy and flashy with a huge TV screens on the walls, order plenty of appetizers and a lot of beer. All in all a really fun night out!!

In China, KTVs are extremely popular. It’s not only a place where people sing, but also eat, interact with each other and play cards.

Each room is dark and has some purple lighting that make you feel very comfortable and relaxed. There is also a huge leather sofa in the middle of the room with a table and small chairs around.

When visiting KTV, you can order a lot of different Chinese snacks, alcoholic drinks and herbal teas. The food is served on small plates and it is decorated with some flowers. The prices of drinks and food are pretty high, but don’t worry – nobody will let you pay for this treat!

Locals head to KTVs at around 6pm – 8pm. As they are open 24/7, you can stay there as long as you want to.

KTVs are so much fun. You can sing Chinese and English songs and dance. Nobody cares about your voice so don’t be shy and have fun singing.

As for the prices, booking one room for one hour usually costs RMB 100-300 ($16-$50) depending on the size. Drinks and food are very expensive. A case of beer (12 bottles) costs between RMB 100 -300 ($16-$50), a small plate of meat should be around RMB 30 ($5).

KTV is a great idea to spend an interesting and full of fun and laugh night out with your friends. You can not only experience authentic Chinese culture, but also listen to some traditional Chinese music, drink as much as you want to and try some Chinese food!
